What is ROI?

Return On Investment (ROI)

Cisco's ROI from the social media shows how social technologies saved them over $100,000 on a product launch.

Cisco looked to social media, instead of looking at their traditional method for launching a product.

While their product launched, they normally used costly newspaper ads for their business. However, their new router they ran a launch that took place entirely online.
They even turned to second life, staging a pre-launch concert in there.

Their online launch not only saved them money, but it also allowed them to reach a wider customer, further extending the value of the campaign.

In total, the online launch produced better results like a sixth of their traditional product launches.

A great example to show how social media can be used to change the way a business, driving ROI where you might not expect it.

Social Media Monitoring - QLD Health

Welcome to my blog J

We are almost getting to the destination of our Enterprise 2.0 voyage. Hooray !
Let’s keep the steam up.

This week’s task: Applying two social media monitoring tools to an organization.

I select one organization which is related to our assignments; Queensland Health.
And the social media monitoring tools which I have chosen to conduct this week’s task on are Addictomatic and Social Mention.

What is Social Media Monitoring?
It is monitoring an organization’s social media channels such as blogs, Twitter, Facebook page, Youtube, etc. for information about their business. It allows the organization to determine what customers are thinking or saying about their work, brand or topic. By using the social media monitoring tools, the organization can get huge benefits.

Addictomatic and Social mention
Both are an online social media monitoring tools which provides the latest news, blog posts, videos and images. (Twitter Search, Wordpress.com, Friendfeed, Ask.com News, Bing News, YouTube, Twingly Blog Search, Google Blog Search, Flickr, etc.)
First, I just simply entered the organization’s name which is “Queensland Health”. It was little bit difficult to determine the effective keyword to get the best results. The result came out in various social media channel with anything related to the keyword.

Addictomatic gives the opportunity to monitor recent conversations and contents about Queensland Health on many different channels. It allows the users can select the “Available Sources” they want to look at. It makes much easier to do the social media monitoring. Unfortunately, the Twitter box presents “No results found” message because Twitter likes to use really simple names. (“qld health”)
★★★★☆

Socialmention
Another useful social media monitoring platform is socialmention. The user only need to do is just enter the name of an organization like “Queensland Health”. It is really easy to use; however my experience is not as good as “Addictomatic”.  Because the layout is little bit messy but the good thing is a diagram, graph and chart on the left hand side. It is nice and clear to identify all of the results in some categories.
★★★☆☆

Addictomatic offers a bigger portfolio of different results. On the other hands, socialmention has much better features to analyze the topic.
These kind of social media monitoring tools are really important to organization’s marketing aspect.

This is my end today and I hope you enjoyed my blog post.
See you next time!

The Electronics Giant SAMSUNG

Welcome back again all my readers to read my blog post!! J

This is my 8th blog post already. Hooray!!

It is a little bit cold and rainy outside today, so I feel like I will stay inside and post about today’s topic. In my previous blog post, I have covered ‘how different types of organizations can benefit from social technology using McKinsey’s 10 value levers’. So, this time I will be talking about how social media such as blog, facebook, twitter and using wiki can support the business within the professional services sector to enhance their value levers such as product development, operations and distribution, marketing and sales, and business support functions.

The organization to be discussed today will be Samsung.

South Korean electronics giant Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate company. Samsung Telecommunications is one of five business units within Samsung Electronics, belonging to the Samsung group, and consists of the Mobile Communication Division, telecommunication systems division, computer division, MP3 business team, mobile solution centre and telecommunication R&D centre. Samsung is a market leader in consumer electronics and cell phones and for more than 70 years, Samsung has been at the forefront of innovation.

Recently, Samsung has unveiled its hotly anticipated smartwatch the Glaxy Gear, which allows users to make calls, receive texts and emails and take photos.
Samsung is the well largest smart phone maker Overtaking apple Apple in a last year.

Samsung has a relationship with social media usage and McKinsey Value lever.

The professional services sector can use social media to enhance their business to communicate with their clients and customers (knowledge sharing, customer reviews, collaboration, etc.). In this case, Samsung makes more benefits by their own social media pages, which are Facebook, Twitter and Blog.

Facebook and Twitter

https://twitter.com/SamsungMobile

Samsung use not only Facebook page but also using Twitter to talk about their business and all things product. Also, their customers are able to communicate and discuss with Samsung. Facebook page and Twitter is quietly working on a new advertising system that would let marketers target users with ads based on the massive amounts of information people reveal on the site about themselves.

Blog

<Samsung Tomorrow>
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/
Samsung already has their own global blog managed by the corporate communications team at Samsung Electronics about their culture, their works (products and services) and their people. So this official blog present exclusive information, opinions and occasional clarifications to the customers in a timely fashion.

Samsung is making great use of Enterprise 2.0 (social media) to improve value levers of their business. Blog, Facebook, and Twitter are very powerful tools for organisations to gain more attention from customers.

Thank you for reading my blog post!
see you next time

Cheers!

RSPCA using social media for all creatures great and small !!

Welcome back all of my faithful readers!! :)

This week!
I will  be talking about a non-profit organisation ...the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) and how this organisation in the social sector can benefit from using social media, in relation to McKinsey's Global Institute.

The RSPCA is a non-profit organisation that involved with animal welfare to prevent cruelty and promote their care and protection. It runs 40 shelters and spends more than $80 million every year on the services by corporate sponsorship, fundraising events and voluntary donations. RSPCA has become a large organisation by using social media such as a Facebook, Twitter, Blog and YouTube to communicate with people and it allows the RSPCA to benefit from the following value levers.

Collect information and insights:   - Gather information
                                                     - Crowd-source resources and solutions

mobilize resources:                     - Raising money
                                                 - Expand volunteer networks

Execute mission:                        - Educate the public
                                                 - Engage supporters

▲ some of the McKinsey's levers for achieving social business value

Raising Money: RSPCA has a donation link in their social media to gain amounts of donations. It inspires all people to make donation via Facebook page.

Expand volunteer networks & Educate the public: social media is the great way to engage with supporters and educate followers about what they are doing. e.g) post upcoming events, news, etc. on the facebook page, using hash tag(Twitter).

                                    ▲ Using HashTag promoting

                                        ▲ Example of Funding

RSPCA can be a good example of non-profit organisation using social media to achieve their major goal. However, keeping volunteers engaged for continuous support can be really hard. They need to find the ways to improve their social media strategy so that they can get more supports.

Thank you for reading and See you next time :)

Social Media Legal Risks with Starbucks

If one of your employees posted a dodgy comment on social media, or a customer tweeted a false claim against your business, How you gonna deal with this problem?

Recently, social media such as facebook, twitter, blog and others is not only the way people communicate with each other, but changing the way people work as well.

However, organization can have tremendous benefits and risks at the same time.

This week, I will look into an organization that could face a legal risk due to participation in the social media

STARBUCKS’ TWITTER CAMPAIGN GOES HORRIBLY WRONG!

A Starbucks Story :

The company launched a hashtag campaign on Twitter #SpreadTheCheer which was used more for bashing the brand then spreading the holiday hip-hooray. And the more embarrassing part is that a big LED screen placed in one of their shops was showing the tweets.  (19, Dec. 2013 by Srdjan Toljagic)

So, a tweet like “Tax dodging MoFo’s” appears on a giant led screen while you are drinking your coffee. Starbucks had only paid $13.8million in taxes despite $4.9 billion sales in Britain.
"A Starbucks spokesperson said: “We apologies to any visitors who may have been offended by inappropriate messages displayed on the Twitter wall screen at the Natural History Museum’s ice rink face on Sunday. This was due to a temporary malfunction with the content filtering system.”

How can the organization deal with the legal risks?
I found really nice and clear resource which is about top 5 risks and solutions to deal with the legal risks.

1. Reputation management: Social media may cause a risk to a company’s reputation by creating negative publicity. Legal issues may perhaps arise if a company gives an inappropriate comment about another company on a social media platform for instance.
·          Solution: Create an approval process involving a senior leader for any social media communication.  Do not give a junior person full control as their inexperience could cause irreparable damage.

2. Security Issues: There is always a risk of hacking, spy-ware and bugs amongst others. This means that there is a risk of having confidential company information leaked outside the company.
·         Solution:  Work with your IT department or hire a professional to ensure proper privacy and security settings are in place.  This is critical to protect confidential information, to avoid having your account hacked, or falling victim to cyber theft.   Higher profile companies will need more sophisticated security systems.

3. Engaging in two-way dialogue and potential criticism: While social media allows a company to interact directly with customers in real time, it also gives those same customers a public platform to voice dissatisfaction.
·         Solution: Carefully monitor the social media platforms you operate on so you can quickly identify negative feedback and address it before it gains support.

4.  Trust as part of the culture: In order for employees to use social media in a successful way for the company, trust is a prerequisite. Not having that trust as part of the organizational culture can present a risk when it comes to social media.
·         Solution: Create an extensive training program for the entire organization highlighting the do’s and don’ts. While everybody in the company needs to understand the mission, only allow a trusted few to actually pull the trigger.

5. Wasting company time: Social media can be addictive and there is a risk that employees will spend too much time on it, compromising their work and thus the organization’s business operations.
·         Solution: Many companies monitor what website employees visit and how much time they spend on them.  If an employee seems to be spending an unnecessary amount of time on social media sites, have human resources discuss it with them.

Reference:

The really important factor of using social media within the organization and also external parties is Legal risks. First, organization can easily manage the internal risks through the accurate usage policy which outlines what employees can and cannot do in regards to the usage of the social media at work place. Second, organization need to accept the customers’ feedback and provide nice & clear service in order to deal with the external parties.
There are two sides of social media and it could bring both pros and cons to the organization. So, they should know how to use it properly to get the best results.

Implementing Social Tech - Starbucks Coffee

Welcome! My readers :)

Today's blog will be focused on how businesses can make use of social technology to add value to their business.

Today's topic :

"requires you to select an organisation (your choice) and to identify and discuss some of the major benefits and value levers associated with implementing Enterprise 2.0. Concentrate on one (maximum two) of the 5 functional areas described above and use the relevant Social Technology value levers published by McKinsey Global Institute, 2012."

I'm a kind of coffeeholic :P
Coffee in the morning makes me feel so Good!

So, This is why I choose the Starbucks Coffee organisation to start my journey.

(Zev Siegl, Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, 1979.)

Starbucks is an global coffee organisation based in Seattle, Washington, U.S.
It opened by three partners who met while students at the University of San Francisco.
English teacher Jerry Baldwin, History teacher Zev siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker.

In the initial stage, Starbuck's stock price was going down (market doesn't believe in Starbucks) but people still love coffee!! So, the Starbucks management decided to implement the Web 2.0 technology to collect customer's ideas and feedbacks.

It's My Starbucks Idea!!   (http://mystarbucksidea.force.com/apex/ideaHome)
people can post their own ideas and see how Starbucks puts those ideas to work. For example, birthday drinks, a punch card system, locally baked goods to Coffee ice cubes...

The community can vote to select the best ideas!!

Combine the concepts of change, experimentation, social media, customer engagement and market research and made the results.

This is so effective! having customer engagement and making the results key components of their dominant brand by using Enterprise 2.0 (COOL)

As of November 16, 2012, This global coffee organisation is present in 61 countries and territories. (Transcontinental-Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Oceania, Asia, Europe and North America)
